Later in the year, he and Walters formed another company, this time focusing on post-production work. And then you may have noticed him Wednesday night on the hit show Smallville, where he is currently doing a six-episode arc as the mysterious Adam Knight. 

So when exactly does he find time to sleep?

Juggling two companies and an acting career does take up most of his waking hours, but whenever his schedule allows, Ian heads for the ocean.

An avid fisherman, he also enjoys boating, surfing, wakeboarding or just sitting on the beach with a good book. Heavily involved with ocean conservation efforts, he devotes time to Shifting Baselines and several other ocean conservation efforts.

He credits his Choctaw heritage (his mother is part Choctaw Indian) for his deep connection with nature and animals. He says he gets along better with animals than most people and claims to be allergic to 'mean people.'

While all of his career achievements are impressive (especially for someone who is only 25), ask any fan and they'll tell you the most impressive thing about Ian is his personality.

He's sweet and sincere, intelligent and funny, and honest when most people in show business are not. The adorable kind of guy you can't help but love. And love him is exactly what his devoted fans do.

From the start, he's made it a point to connect with them on a more personal level. He's participated in online chats, posted on message boards and answers his own email, but the real treat came in April 2003 when he agreed to answer questions sent in every week from fans.

Known as the Friday Five, Ian has answered questions about everything from his underwear preference (briefs) to which performance made him cringe (the opening party scene in The Rules of Attraction).

When asked about his advice for aspiring models he replied, "get in, get out with as much money and sanity as you can possibly run with."

So while it's easy to get caught up in his looks, my advice to you is if you ever get the chance to meet Ian Somerhalder – take the time to talk to him. I promise it will be one of the more enjoyable conversations you'll ever have.
From the Eyes of a Fanatic

His eyes speak. But he chooses his companions. You need to understand its color- the depth of an ocean blue, almost fathomless, yet full of life. It dares you to go deeper, to dive into an ocean of dreams, of insights, of thoughts still trapped inside. He challenges you just by the way he stares and when he smiles it is as if he welcomes you and invites you to get closer.

There is a reason for the color and more often people misunderstood its beauty, its spark. It must be the insecurity in us all, for not having such eyes, that we brand him a tease, a boy gone bad...

That in essence is how he affected me when I first saw his face, in a magazine. And when I watched him repeatedly, in that most exquisite scene in Life as a House, where he urges Hayden to get out of the car and sell his body for money. There is that spark again, his eyes somehow became the focus of the whole picture. Hayden Christensen maybe a good actor, but Ian Somerhalder is a god.
