Book of the Month: SOLAR by Ian McEwan

Written by Jed Medina

Here's our book of the month.

The New York Times' Walter Kirn reviews Ian McEwan's latest, SOLAR:

According to the perverse aesthetics of artistic guilty pleasure, certain books and movies are so bad — so crudely conceived, despicably motivated and atrociously executed — that they’re actually rather good. “Solar,” the new novel by Ian McEwan, is just the opposite: a book so good — so ingeniously designed, irreproachably high-minded and skillfully brought off — that it’s actually quite bad. Instead of being awful yet absorbing, it’s impeccable yet numbing, achieving the sort of superbly wrought inertia of a Romanesque cathedral. There’s so little wrong with it that there’s nothing particularly right about it, either. It’s impressive to behold but something of a virtuous pain to read. [ read more ]

Male Models: Looking Back at the Past - The Case of Brian Buzzini (Part 2 of a 5-part series)

Written by Jed Medina

If you're a male model, you're not supposed to be conscious about being naked - whether you're doing a photoshoot for a fashion editorial or just changing clothes during a runway show. It's part of the job, so they say.  If there's a gig where you get the chance to work with Steven Meisel or Mario Testino or Bruce Weber and it involves some nudity, would you refuse or even think about it?

The backstage scene nowadays is almost always the same. Photographers - fashion and otherwise - are always busy capturing the 'chaotic' scene backstage, any male model would feel lucky if any of these photographers took fancy on them! (while undressing, that is!).

But what if you decided to take nudity to the next level? We're not talking about some pretty hot naked shots for Abercrombie and Fitch. We're talking about posing for a hardcore mag!

Before the advent of porn sites (straight and gay), posing naked for Playgirl is arguably one of the best vehicles to launch a modeling career.

Anyway, let's take a look at one hot 'nudity' case...

FASHION + FILM: "American Gigolo" by Paul Schrader

Written by Jed Medina

ModelMax is doing a special series on films that put the spotlight on fashion. It will run the whole months of April and May.

Giorgio Armani dressed Richard Gere in American Gigolo, a drama-thriller about a high-class male prostitute, and the Armani brand will never be the same again.

Following the film's success, Armani used his newfound cachet in the youth market to launch Emporio Armani, a less expensive but classically chic label, which set him one step closer on the road to world domination.

While he is known for outfitting men in intimidating power suits, Giorgio's influence on women's fashion shouldn't be overlooked. His signature androgynous designs for women made trouser suits chic, both in and out of the boardroom. Employing his three rules eliminate the superfluous, emphasise the comfortable and acknowledge the elegance of the uncomplicated Armani ushered in the return of Hollywood glamour and became a true fashion icon. Definitely a great case study about fashion and film.

FASHION + FILM: "The Great Gatsby" + "Brideshead Revisited" + Oxbridge Fashion and Elitism by El Bosquejo

Written by Zandy Joel Castro

ModelMax is doing a special series on films that put the spotlight on fashion. It will run the whole months of April and May.

Movies and fashion blend beautifully together. The recent fashion show featuring the latest collection by Dolce and Gabbana was inspired by the film Baarìa - La porta del vento, an upcoming Sicilian-Italian comedy film directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. It was the opening film of the 66th Venice International Film Festival in September 2009. It is also the Italian entry for the 2010 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

The Great Gatsby Trailer ]

Directed by Jack Clayton from the screenplay of Francis Ford-Coppola, The Great Gatsby (1974) tells about Nick Carraway, a young Midwesterner now living on Long Island, who finds himself fascinated by the mysterious past and lavish lifestyle of his neighbor, the nouveau riche Jay Gatsby. He is drawn into Gatsby's circle, becoming a witness to obsession and tragedy.

NEW FACE: Sylvester @Unique grabs VMan Youth in Revolt Editorial!

Written by Jed Medina

Says Jesper @Unique Models about new face Sylvester:

When a kid like Sylvester shows up, we can't really care about the fact that he just turned 15, or that in fact he's not tall enough for the runways of the world yet OR the fact that he's in school and has to stay there, which all means we can't really book on him for a while. We just can't hide away his beauty in a drawer - we have to share him with all of you. So here you go - this is Sylvester! [ read more ]

[ Unique's Sylvester photogrpahed for VMan by Hedi Slimane ]

Of course, Jesper knows what he speaks. He discovered Eddie Klint, among others. If you want some additional background info, read our agency profile of Unique.

I think he got another winner in Sylvester! Commented by top agent:

Back in November, Hedi Slimane came to Denmark to shoot Copenhagen's Young and Restless for V MAN. The magazine will come out late April - and of course it will feature some UNIQUE boys. Until then V Man have uploaded a little preview selection that will not be found in the magazine HERE.. Sylvester fits the title Youth In Revolt perfectly.

FASHION + FILM: "Coco Avant Chanel" by Anne Fontaine

Written by Jed Medina

ModelMax is doing a special series on films that put the spotlight on fashion. It will run the whole months of April and May.

Starring Audrey Tautou, 'Coco Avant Chanel' Coco Before Chanel was spectacular! The costumes were extraordinary, fabulous and quite the classic Chanel! I have no idea why it failed to win the Best Costume Design at the recent Oscars...

Says Val Kermode @EyeforFilm:

It is all very beautiful to look at, and packed with references to Chanel’s later creations. The camera pans lovingly over details of clothing, showing us through Coco’s eyes the influences which she gained from observing at events like the races or a trip to the seaside. Credit is due to the costume designer, Catherine Leterrier, who was given the brief of creating this “early Chanel” collection and does a fine job. [ read more ]

About the Movie: Coco Before Chanel is the story of Gabrielle Coco Chanel, who began her life as headstrong orphan, and through an extraordinary journey became the legendary couturier who embodied the modern woman and became a timeless symbol of success, freedom and style. The film portrays the formative years of Chanels life, the years of Chanel spent discovering and inventing herself.
